You might have thought you were in Calais walking down Sutton High Street at the weekend.

All things Gallic were in abundance as the French market hit town.

Traders plied their wares, ranging from French bread, cheese, meat, garlic and wine to arts, crafts and kitchenware. There was also entertainment in the form of an accordion player and unicyclist.

Some councillors had predicted the market might draw trouble from people critical of the French stance during the war but their fears proved to be unfounded.
