A BUNCH of keys and a pen are an unlikely first line of defence if one is attacked, but at Gates of Harlow's Safety at the Wheel evening on Thursday, May 15, this is the practical approach that will be demonstrated.

The evening devoted to tackling driving dangers takes place at the Ford dealer's showroom in Edinburgh Way, and will focus on what dealer principal Adrian Barnes describes as "a professional but thoroughly down-to-earth approach".

He said: "With road rage directed at women hitting the headlines, we're expecting a lot of interest in our women's awareness and self-protection demonstrations."

The audience will be shown how to beat the bullies behind the wheel or, if diplomacy fails, how to use everyday objects normally found about your person for self-protection and a rapid escape from a would-be assailant.

It is not all about self-defence, though. The psychology behind car confidence and so-called 'road rage' will also be explored by an ex-police human behaviour specialist, with practical advice on defensive driving and combating the hazards of modern driving, which members of the audience will be encouraged to take part in.

Advice about the frequent causes of aggressive, dangerous driving and 'motorway madness' will be given, with the audience encouraged to share their own experiences and discuss how they could have been avoided.

Gates will also offer practical, hands-on instruction on dealing with roadside emergencies and visitors will be able to have a go at wheel-changing and routine under-bonnet checks and maintenance to help prevent breakdowns, all under the guidance of Gates' experienced service technicians.

Gloves and overalls will be provided.

Mr Barnes said: "We feel this is a realistic approach to combating road danger. It all takes place over one evening, it is great fun and it also tackles a whole range of possible situations."
