A TRIO of inspirational teenagers has won a prestigious award in the name of one of the most inspirational people of all.

Hayley Hedges and Gemma Higginson, 16, and Kulvir Benning, 14, of Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, Pelham Road, were presented with the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award at a special assembly on January 31.

The pupils were nominated by teachers for showing commitment to learning while facing personal hardship as well as showing selfless duty to others and for being an inspiration.

Gemma said: "We got called to the headmaster's office and we thought we were in trouble but when we were told we had won the award it was a real surprise."

Hayley said she was "shocked to have won".

The girls collected their awards from Chris Pond MP in front of the whole school. Kulvir said: "I was very nervous but all my friends were pleased for me and supportive which was really nice."

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award was launched in April 2000 to recognise outstanding contributions made by secondary school students to their schools and communities while facing their own personal problems.

Respecting the girls' wishes News Shopper is not revealing their particular circumstances.

Gravesend Grammar School headteacher Nicole Chapman said: "I am extremely proud of the girls and absolutely delighted for them.

"Our school motto is To the Stars through Adversity and the girls were nominated because we felt they fulfilled the motto perfectly."

Since the scheme began as a pilot in September 1999, 162 pupils from 84 Kent secondary schools have received awards.

Diana Awards project manager Tessy Ojo said: "Winners are offered the chance to become ambassadors for the Diana Awards whereby they get training on public speaking and presentation.

"It is hoped they can they use their new skills, position and talents to make an impact in their community by dealing with issues ranging from litter problems to raising money for charities.

"In a way it mirrors Princess Diana's own work."
