YOUNGSTERS whose school is a walk away from a river have been chosen to design a logo for an environmental project.

The Groundwork Trust has enlisted eight and nine-year-olds at Barnes Cray Primary School to help carry out a programme of improvements for the River Cray.

The children were at the riverside, near the school in Iron Mill Lane, Crayford, to learn more about it and get inspiration for the logo.

Complete with wellies, clipboards and fishing nets, they spent a morning studying the river's plant and wildlife with Bexley Council Ranger Emily Bradley and project worker Fiona White.

Headteacher Susan Bush said: "The children will have the chance to see their logo take shape, from their initial idea to something they will come to see whenever they visit the river. We are all very excited."

The improvements to the Cray are being funded through a £500,000 grant from the Thames Gateway sustainable communities grant fund.

Groundwork will be working with the school over the next few weeks on the logo and the final design will be unveiled at a ceremony to be held later this year.
