Champion disabled sports stars have been shortlisted as contenders for the London Sports Awards.

Final nominations for the awards, the winners of which will be announced tomorrow week at a gala dinner being held in City Hall, feature a number of local sports people and clubs.

In the sportswoman of the year category, Erith's Sarah-Louise Casey is one of three final nominations.

Sarah-Louise, a member of Sharks Swimming Club, has been shortlisted after winning at the Downs Syndrome National Championships, and selection for the Great Britain team which took part in an International Champ-ionship in South Africa, where she won three golds and set three new world records. In the junior sports-woman class, two of three finalists are from our area.

Lewisham's Rebecca Harding, who has a physical impairment, competes in swimming and wheelchair racing.

She is a dedicated member of several local clubs and has shown outstanding commitment in training and participation in competitions.

Also in this is category is Bromley's Sarah Olney. She has a learning disability and takes part in several sports, including javelin and hammer throwing, and holds two national records while representing Britain in the Global Games, producing excellent results against older and more experienced rivals.

The volunteer of the year award features Barry McDonald, from Orpington. A former student of Majorie McClure School where he completed the sports leadership course, he returns to volunteer his services each Friday to help other students to complete their junior sports leader's programme. He too, faces two other final nominations.

The coach of the year award sees Kay Cook vying for the title. She was a pioneer in gymnastics for the disabled and now manages the Sidcup-based Falcon Spartak Gym Club with whom she coached two gymnasts to become British champions in 2004 and other high-class achievements.

The school of the year award has two from the Bromley borough Rectory Paddock and Majorie McClure making the final four.

In the club and team of the year categories, Sharks Swimming Club based in Mottingham, has been shortlisted for both awards.

Sharks, dedicated to help all disabled people, saw four of its members selected for the England disability squad, as well as winning 38 medals at last year's Junior National Championships among many other high-profile successes. In both team and club categories, Sharks are up against two other finalists.
