YOUNG people proved a Christmas card is not just for Christmas by collecting a record amount for recycling.

Pupils from Raglan Primary School, Raglan Road, Bromley, encouraged family and friends to give more than 336,000 of their old cards.

The school smashed its previous collection record of 230,000 and Year 6 pupil Joshua Shackleton, 10, boosted numbers by collecting 37,500 cards on his own.

The final figure was increased by churches, banks, hospitals and shops, which gave the recycling drive a community feel.

Headteacher Jackie Cassin said: "We are really delighted and overwhelmed at the response of the children to save trees by recycling so many cards."

Ben Ingram of conservation charity The Woodland Trust congratulated the children at an assembly on January 28.

Supermarket giant Tesco took the mountain of festive cheer away for recycling.
