PROPOSALS to expand congestion charging into the suburbs have met with fierce opposition.
Commissioner of Transport for London (TfL) Bob Kiley's scheme would use roadside detectors to monitor electronic tags on passing cars and could be introduced in areas such as Bromley within four years.
Although Mayor Ken Livingstone has distanced himself from the plan unveiled last week, council leaders have already moved to warn him off.
Bromley Council's environment portfolio holder Councillor George Taylor said: "Congestion charging is not a substitute for providing adequate road space.
"These plans would have the effect of forcing people off major routes and create rat runs through residential areas.
"TfL does not know local roads and local issues.
"Bromley borough should be the group to decide on issues like these."
