A SCULPTURE of a 400,000-year-old hand axe has been chosen as a new landmark for a heritage site.
The sculpture will be put up at the main entrance of the Swanscombe Heritage Park.
It was designed by David Robinson and Peter Greenstreet of landscape architects GES Ltd, Priory Road, Dartford.
They entered it in a competition organised by the Swanscombe Heritage Park Action Group and are being given £40,000 to build it.
It is the first in a series of enhancement projects for the park.
Made of stone and stainless steel, the design is modelled on an axe discovered in the park.
Landscape architect Mr Robinson said: "We are delighted our design has been chosen to be the feature entrance for the heritage park.
"We hope the sculpture will raise the public's perception of the site's importance.''
