THE safety of cyclists could be at risk as a result of a controversial new traffic-calming scheme.
Motorists have already complained about the dangers of the new system introduced in Okehampton Crescent, Welling, to try to stop speeding traffic.
But now Bexley councillors and a traffic pressure group have expressed concerns about the new cycle lane, introduced as part of the scheme.
Councillor Peter Catterall, himself a cyclist, suggested at an environmental advisory group meeting the Okehampton Crescent cycle lane could be dangerous. He criticised the appearance in the borough of "eccentric cycle lanes which are being developed in a haphazard way".
Ian Lindon, chairman of the Local Agenda 21 traffic and transport group, expressed concern.
"The lane is too narrow to allow people with bike panniers to cycle safely," he claimed.
One cyclist who knows the dangers is Robert Stevenson, 41, from New Road, Abbey Wood. He was knocked off his bike at the Plymstock Road junction two months ago.
His bike was badly damaged and he had to be treated in hospital for a knee injury.
He said: "The pavements have been dragged out so far now it is dangerous."
