A 32-YEAR-OLD woman who killed her pregnant stepdaughter in a car crash has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail.

Ceyda Ozkan, of St German’s Road, Forest Hill, was sentenced on Friday (Feb 19) at Woolwich Crown Court.

She had pleaded guilty to causing the death by dangerous driving of Filiz Ozkan, aged 21, in Well Hall Road, Eltham, on New Year’s Day last year.

The black Chevrolet Captiva she had been driving hit a tree at around 1.40am, while she was over the drink-drive limit.

Catford resident Filiz, who was seven months pregnant and had been sitting in the front seat, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

Another five passengers, including three young children, were also in the car.

One eight-year-old girl was left in a critical condition, suffering injuries to her pelvis, lungs and wrist.

Other passengers suffered multiple injuries.

In a statement, Filiz’s family said: “Filiz was a lovely person who was killed on New Year's Day after a night out.

“She was looking forward to becoming a mum but this tragedy has prevented that from happening.

“We want to tell everyone that drinking and driving can easily result in fatal crashes, as can not wearing seatbelts.

“Filiz and her baby will rest in peace.

“The driver, Ceyda Ozkan, is starting a four-and-a-half years prison sentence, which is justice but our suffering will go on for many more years."

Ozkan had also been charged with causing death by driving without due care and attention while under the influence, but was found not guilty after the prosecution offered no evidence.

She was also given a five-year driving ban and ordered to take another test.
