Humorist Spike Milligan was born in 1918 in India where his father was serving with the British Army.
When his family moved back to England in 1933 young Milligan attended London Polytechnic at Lewisham.
Milligan went on to write and star in The Goon Show, which was first broadcast on BBC Radio in 1951. His subversive brand of humour delighted several generations and helped to redefine British comedy.
He also enjoyed great success with his comic literature and poetry.
Milligan died aged 83 in 2002.
