A LORRY driver arrested in connection with the death of a 10-year-old girl from Penge has been bailed by police.

The 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the incident, which happened at around 8am on Tuesday (January 26).

He has been bailed to return to a south London police station in late March.

The crash victim, Latoya Smith, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by the vehicle in East Dulwich.

Doctors at Kings College Hospital in Denmark Hill were unable to save the youngster and she was pronounced dead at 8.44am.

Police say a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

Sergeant Simon Seeley, from the Met’s traffic collision investigation unit, said: “This incident happened at a busy time and lots of people will have witnessed this terrible tragedy.

“It is crucial that we establish the events that led up to this young child's death and we appeal for anyone who saw this collision to get in touch.

“In particular, there were several people at a bus stop at the location, who kindly rushed to the assistance of the child before the ambulance arrived, we would very much like to speak to all of them."

Anyone with information should call the collision investigation unit at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 1574.
