PLANS to build cricket pitches on two of Lewisham’s parks have been given the go-ahead.

Hilly Fields in Brockley and Mayow Park in Lower Sydenham will have the outfields renovated, cricket squares re-built and changing facilities refurbished.

The project has been launched by Envirowork Lewisham and so far has received £243,000 from the Big Lottery.

Talks are under way with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the London Marathon Charitable Trust for a further £357,000.

Envirowork Lewisham provides employment and training for long-term unemployed people aged between 18 and 24.

The project will help the young people develop their skills and gain a work-based diploma in horticulture.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “Thanks to all the hard work by Envirowork Lewisham, Teachsport and Lewisham Council, two of the borough’s parks will now be helping local residents to lead healthier lifestyles through playing more community-based sport.”
