A BY-ELECTION will be held for a council vacancy in Stone following the removal of a councillor who failed to attend meetings for six months.

Former Stone parish councillor for St John’s ward, Sydney Ahamefula, was last month automatically disqualified because he had not turned up at council or committee meetings since March 11.

Under the Local Government Act, councillors must attend one meeting every six months.

To fill the vacancy an election has been called for January 28 following a request by 10 electors from the ward.

Stone Parish Council clerk Jennie Thomas said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to get involved in real grass roots democracy and influence local services and facilities for the benefit of the community.”

The election takes place from 7am to 10pm at Brent Primary School, London Road, Stone.

Those interested in registering as an election candidate need to do so by December 31 and residents wanting to vote must be on the electoral register.
