PARTS of south-east London and north Kent are expected to be hit by snow today with heavy snow in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for London and the south east warning between five and 10cm of snow is due to fall in the next 48 hours.

Trains

Southeastern railway are working with their industry partners to ensure a normal service will run but the snow may cause some disruption to services.

A spokesman said: “Staff will be on hand at stations to help passengers, but we advise all passengers to check southeasternrailway.co.uk, nationalrail.co.uk or call National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

Lewisham and Greenwich

Greenwich Council has a fleet of gritting lorries on standby, ready for action if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Main roads, public transport routes, hospital access streets and well-trafficked hills are the main salting routes.

Greenwich's deputy council leader, Peter Brooks, said: "We want to make sure residents can go about their normal business whatever the weather. We are confident our teams have all the measures in place to keep the roads clear."

Bromley

Bromley Council’s gritting crews have been out salting the main 200 miles of ‘priority’ routes and other ‘secondary’ routes.

The salting routes are focussed on main roads, bus routes, roads leading to fire and ambulance stations, hospitals and schools.

Assistant director for street services, Paul Symonds, said: “At the first sign of icy road conditions, our crews are out on the major routes across the borough to keep them as safe as possible.

“Our gritting crews are geared up throughout winter to operate round the clock and that’s precisely what we are doing at the moment.

“In icy conditions drivers need to take extra care, especially on minor roads which will not have been salted”.

Bexley

Bexley Council has five front line mechanical gritting vehicles constantly on standby and salt bins across the borough have also been refilled in readiness for snow and ice.

Cabinet member for transport, Councillor Peter Craske, said: "Although we are well prepared, the variables of weather mean we have to be as flexible as possible, to deal with sudden changes in conditions. We are as ready for the winter weather as we possibly can be."

Dartford and Gravesend

Kent County Council has been salting the main roads in Kent twice a day since Sunday (Dec 13) in the early hours of the morning and in the evenings.

Kent Police is advising motorists to take care in wintry conditions.

Temperatures have fallen and icy roads are expected to lead to poor driving conditions for the next few days.

Chief Inspector Roscoe Walford said: “Motorists need to take the weather and road conditions into account when driving in wintry weather. If the weather is severe, please only travel if your journey is absolutely necessary."
