DEFENCE barristers for two girls on trial for the manslaughter of Rosimeiri Boxall have given their final speeches at the Old Bailey today (Nov 13).

Oluwakemi Ajose, aged 19, of Floyd Road, Charlton, and a 15-year-old girl from Belvedere, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Miss Boxall, of Battery Road, Thamesmead, was found beneath an open window after falling from the second floor of a three-storey house in Coleraine Road, Blackheath, on May 17 last year.

It is alleged the two defendants were bullying Miss Boxall before she fell.

Tanoo Mylvaganam, defence barrister for the 15-year-old girl, spoke to the jury today about mobile phone footage filmed by boys in the flat from where 19-year-old Miss Boxall plunged to her death.

It appears to show Miss Boxall being beaten up by Ajose on the day she fell.

Miss Mylvaganam said: “It reflects one person using violence. It's easy to use a broad brush and smear the brush in order to get a wider and more significant picture.”

She told the jury that fingers pointed at the 15-year-old defendant, asking why she did not stop it.

She added: “But what about the boys? They were there.”

Miss Mylvaganam also spoke about the 15-year-old allegedly threatening Miss Boxall with a bathroom light cord.

She said: “Bear in mind Rosie is 19 and adult - somebody who had the confidence to leave home to go and live with her boyfriend, make decisions for herself.

“How fearful is a 19-year-old going to be of anything like that?”

She added: “During the day Rosie could have left the place any time, could have gone home if she wanted to."

The barrister asked: “How credible is it that fear is the only reason that led her out the window?”

Malcolm Bishop, defending Ajose, also spoke about the video footage.

He said: “Remember also for the duration of that video there were three boys in that flat and they lifted not a finger to stop it.

“Could it be members of the jury that the actuality of what happened was less than the impression that the video gave?”

Mr Bishop also suggested Miss Boxall may have accidentally fallen while trying to retrieve a pair of her jeans which had ended up on the roof of the house after being burned on a cooker the day before her death.

He said: “Supposing Rosie had wanted to leave and get together her stuff.

"She gets on the ledge on the sink, goes through the window to collect her jeans. She has worn trainers, she goes on that wet surface.

“It's raining, she slips and falls to her tragic death. Is that so far-fetched?”

The trial continues.
