A TRADITIONAL African marriage ceremony practiced in Benin in West Africa was the theme for this year’s Black History Month event organised through social landlord the Hyde Group.
Held in The Arches at Thamesmead, the event involved both staff and tenants of the group.
More than 100 people, mainly families, attended the fun, which also featured music and dance, a children’s fashion show, drama, workshops, a hair-tying competition and an exhibition.
One of the residents, Connie Nakalanzi, who helped to organise it, said: “The event was very different because it was entertaining and educating at the same time.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the show and am proud to have been a part of the project planning team.”
Another, Racheal Namutebi, added: “The African culture came to life, right here in London.”
The organisation of the event was spearheaded by the group’s in touch project, a registered charity within Hyde, which aims to make a positive difference to people’s lives.
