A CONSTRUCTION company has been presented with an oak sapling as reward for its community work.

Building firm Mansell won a business community Big Tick award last year for running its community employment programme while building new homes on the Honour Oak Estate.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock planted the sapling in the estate's community garden in Turnham Road and said: "There’s an old saying that comes to mind – ‘From little acorns, mighty oaks grow’ – and in this case it couldn’t be more true.

"Mansell not only provided jobs and training for local people, but by ensured that, where possible, supply contracts have gone to local businesses."

The company's regional managing director, Keith Taylor, said: “We were delighted to win the award and it seemed fitting to mark our commitment to the Honor Oak community by planting the sapling in the neighbourhood where all the residents will be able to enjoy it as it grows.”
