A GROUNDBREAKING scheme has been launched which will see 60 women from black and minority ethnic communities shadowing one of their local councillors.

More than 30 local authorities, including Bexley will be taking part in the scheme, organised by Operation Black Vote.

The women will have to commit at least six working days over six months to learn about the roles and responsibilities of a councillor.

The idea is the experience will give the women the knowledge and motivation to become actively involved in local politics, while the councillors will gain a wider insight into the different communities they serve.

Oluwatosin Okuleye from Erith will be shadowing a Bexley councillor.

She said: “I believe this scheme is important to let black and minority ethnic women know what a councillor’s role and duties entail and to empower them to know they have the ability and skills to achieve it.”
