DETAILS of an agreement between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers’ Union to call off strike action will be revealed today.

Postal strikes planned for today and Monday were yesterday cancelled after the two parties agreed to hold “a period of calm” to allow talks to take place.

Around 121,000 postal workers were expected to stage a third walk out due to a bitter dispute over jobs, pay and pensions.

Any industrial action has been postponed until the New Year at the earliest, quelling fears of a post crisis over Christmas.

CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: “There needs to be exceptional efforts to improve trust and relationships between CWU and Royal Mail.

“As a result both TUC and ACAS will have a continuing role to keep the discussions and agreement on track.”

Managing director of Royal Mail, Mark Higson, said: “I’m delighted for our customers and our people that we’ve got back to a sensible agreement with the CWU that will allow us to deliver a great Christmas while getting on with vital talks about the long term future of Royal Mail - and allows us to drive forward with the essential modernisation of Royal Mail in the new year.”
