STREETS in the borough are to be lined with 208 new trees, the Mayor of London has announced.

The trees will be planted between now and spring with the aim of making communities a better place to live.

Bromley is one of 20 boroughs set to benefit from around 4,000 new street trees thanks to funding from Boris Johnson.

Mr Johnson said: “Trees are wonderful additions to our communities helping to make neighbourhoods more pleasant.”

The street tree programme is managed by the Forestry Commission, the government department responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands.

Street trees offer a range of benefits including attracting wildlife, providing shade, helping improve local air quality and reducing flood risk.

Financial grants are now being offered to organisations to plant trees across the area.

Residents who registered their interest online about having a tree in their street will also be spoken to.
