A MAN slit his ex-girlfriend’s throat with a breadknife and claimed to a friend he was trying to cut her head off.

The woman, who had also suffered a severe beating turned up, bleeding, at Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup, asking where she was and where she could get a cab.

Stephen Thompkins (corr), aged 46, of Birkbeck Road, Sidcup, had taken the 37-year-old woman back to his flat after they had dinner together in April this year, Woolwich Crown Court was told.

But once there, his behaviour changed.

Thompkins dragged her around the flat, punched her face and body, smashed her face on the end of a wooden bed, bit her cheek and then cut her throat.

The woman told police she thought she was going to die.

She waited until Thompkins fell asleep before making her escape.

Staff at the hospital called the police.

She was treated for the neck wound as well as cuts and severe bruises to her body and face, including two black eyes.

Thompkins admitted GBH and was jailed for seven years.
