EXTENDING Crossrail to Gravesend remains on the cards after the Government said it would protect the route from any future development.

Set to open in 2017, Crossrail will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow to Shenfield in Essex and Abbey Wood.

Despite there being no plans or commitment to extend the 73-mile railway line further to Gravesend, safeguarding it prevents any development on the route.

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said: “This is good news for the people of Kent.

“Safeguarding will allow this important rail project to be extended in the future if the business case stands up.

“By doing this we are future proofing Crossrail.

“The Government is committed to Crossrail and the economic benefits it will bring to London and the south east.”
