POLICE have launched a murder inquiry after a Beckenham man was killed in a suspected homophobic attack.

Ian Baynham suffered head injuries on September 25 after being assaulted outside the South African Embassy in Trafalgar Square.

The 62-year-old died last night (October 13) after doctors turned off his life support machine.

Mr Baynham lived in Gresham Road and his neighbours told News Shopper he was always friendly and eager to lend a hand.

Olga Prokofieva said: “It is very upsetting and such a shame he has died.

“He was a really nice guy. I would not want another neighbour.”

His next door neighbour, who did not want to be named, said Mr Baynham lived with another man, who was away on a two-week cruise when the attack happened.

She said: "I called Ian to see if he was alright but he didn't answer.

"I thought he was away or asleep.

"He was a keep fit fanatic and spent a lot of time at The Spa leisure centre."

She added: "He offered to do my shopping for me and was always very friendly and helpful."

UK Border Agency

The Home Office has confirmed Mr Baynham worked in its UK Border Agency office in Croydon.

Detectives leading the investigation say a 30-year-old man also received minor injuries as a result of the incident involving Mr Baynham at around 10.45pm.

It is understood the pair became involved in an argument with two women and another man, who had all been sitting in the area prior to the attack.

Both women suspected of being involved were white and aged between 16 and 20. Both had blonde hair and were wearing jeans.

The third suspect is described by police as a dark skinned man, aged between 16 and 20.
