A BOROUGH began a month of events celebrating black history with a book launch.

The event at Catford Town Hall in Catford Road featured a launch of the reprinted version of W. George Brown’s autobiography Windrush to Lewisham, The Memoirs of Uncle George.

The book has been out of print for a decade and its reprint was aptly funded by Lewisham Council.

It is about William George, one of the 500 Jamaicans, on board the SS Empire Windrush that sailed from the Caribbean and arrived at Tilbury in Essex on 22 June 1948.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “I feel it’s important that everyone, regardless of their colour or age, is given the chance to learn first hand what life was like for the first black people that came to England on the Windrush.”
