A BOROUGH’S deputy mayor is to run for Parliament at the next election.
Lewisham Councillor Cllr Heidi Alexander was selected as Labour’s candidate for Lewisham East at a party meeting.
The 34-year-old, also cabinet member for regeneration, hopes to take over from the ward’s current MP Bridget Prentice who earlier this year announced she would stand down.
Ms Alexander told the meeting: “I’m determined to build on Bridget’s local record and make Lewisham an even better place to live for our families, our senior citizens and our children.”
One of the people she will be up against is Conservative candidate Jonathan Clamp.
Mr Clamp said: “I congratulate Ms Alexander on her selection and look forward to discussing the issues with her in a constructive way.”
