DETECTIVES are still appealing for witnesses and information after the gangland style execution of an Orpington man.

Daniel Herbert, of Holywell Close, Orpington, was chased then beaten unconscious before being dragged to his knees and shot in the head.

Emergency services were called at just after 2am on August 17 to Clements Road, Rotherhithe, and found the 27-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.

He died in hospital the next day.

Nightclub promoter Mr Herbert was very familiar with the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey area and had many friends there, even though he has lived in Orpington for seven years.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said: "Daniel ran down St James' Road, pleading for help from passing cars. He was heard to say 'help me, help me.'

"Five men set upon him at Clements Road at the junction with St James' Road.

“He was beaten senseless and rendered unconscious, dragged to his knees and was then shot in the head at close range.

“This was a callous and vicious murder.

"We are keeping an open mind as to motive at this stage.

“I urgently need to hear from anyone who saw Daniel in the hours before his death in Bermondsey.

“He had been in the area since six o'clock that evening and he was a distinctive looking man.

“He was tall and slim and had prominent ears.

"On that day he was wearing jeans, which had been spattered with paint, someone might well remember seeing him in them.

“I'm also interested to hear from anyone who saw an incident that developed from Dockley Road, Lucy Road and Lucy Way, which may well have included Daniel being pursued by his murderers."

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

On Monday a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been released without charge.

A 23-year-old was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder. He has been bailed to return in late October pending further enquiries.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man yesterday and he remains in custody at a south London police station on suspicion of murder.
