OLYMPIC shooting will be held at a famous barracks, it has been confirmed.

The Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, has been confirmed by the Olympic Board as a venue for the 2012 Games.

A feasibility study had been carried out on the National Shooting Centre in Bisley to consider it as a possible alternative site.

It also looked at Barking Reach, vacant land that was formally the site of Barking Reach Power Station in east London.

British Shooting, the governing body of Britain's Olympic shooters, had previously raised concerns that use of the barracks would leave no lasting legacy for the sport.

But the board claims use of the Woolwich barracks will allow the shooting to take place close to the Olympic Village and be most cost-effective.

Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee Sebastian Coe said: “It is an iconic venue close to the Olympic Village, with a strong shooting heritage, and is one of the Greenwich cluster of Olympic and Paralympic venues.

“We will now work closely with the Ministry of Defence and all interested parties to ensure all arrangements are in place for a first class venue for shooting.”

Olympic shooting is made up of pistol, rifle and shotgun competitions.
