POLICE cordoned off part of Foots Cray Meadows in North Cray this morning after a group of dog walkers spotted what appeared to be human remains in the River Cray.

Trained officers from Met Police's marine support unit at Tower Bridge were called to the scene and retrieved what is believed to be a skull from the river near the Five Arches bridge.

Duncan Burt was one of the dog walkers who first spotted the skull.

The 43-year-old, of Sidcup Hill, Sidcup, said: "I was walking over the Five Arches bridge with my wife and dog when my dog tried to go into the water.

"I followed him to try and stop him from going in when I saw the skull very clearly bobbing in the water.

"It had a jaw bone and I could see teeth.

"I phoned the police straight away, I was so shocked at what I had found."

On first examination, police say the skull appears to be very old.

Matt Hassock, aged 52, of Riverside Road, Sidcup, said: "I arrived just after the police turned up.

"A couple of my friends who were out walking their dog called me to say that body parts had been found in the river.

"So I decided to go along to find out more.

"I saw someone rummaging around in the river and pull something out.

"Afterwards they were going through the river with a fine tooth comb."
