A COLLECTION held at the memorial service for Bexley councillor and former mayor Alf Catterall, who died last October, will be used to help the borough’s young people.
The service was held in Christ Church, Bexleyheath, last November, and the collection raised more than £1,600.
The cash will go to the The Youth Awareness Programme (TYAP), a voluntary organisation in the borough which supports children and young people and helps them develop within the community, working in partnership with parents, carers, other local organisations and statutory groups.
It will be used offer young people the chance of taking part in a variety of initiatives aimed at promoting healthy life choices and diverting them away from anti-social behaviour, gangs, crime and substance abuse.
His son Peter, also a Bexley councilllor, said: “My father always said the worst poverty is poverty of aspiration.
“My hope and that of our family is that this money can be used to help tackle their problems."
