THERE will be no increase in a borough’s council tax rate this year The tax freeze was agreed at a Greenwich Council meeting on January 28.

But the council was criticised for raising rents for its tenants at the same time.

From April 6, tenants will see their rents rise by £4.58 per week on average.

Leader of Greenwich Tories Councillor Spencer Drury said: “This year is the wrong time to put this level of rent increase on the poorer members of the community.”

But cabinet member for neighbourhood services Councillor Maureen O’Mara said the increase was needed if the council was to provide its Decent Homes scheme.

Cllr O’Mara said: “This still makes Greenwich one of the councils with the lowest rents in London.”
