A MASS protest was held to voice concerns over job cuts and a school closure.

More than 100 members of Greenwich Unison, parents and teachers joined together to lobby Greenwich Council at Woolwich Town Hall, Wellington Street, before a full council meeting last night (January 28).

Unison claims council policies and reorganisation of departments including children’s services will lead to compulsory redundancies and pay cuts.

Parents from Charlotte Turner Primary School, Benbow Street, Deptford, joined the protest after councillors decided to consult on closing the school following Ofsted’s recommendation to put it into special measures.

After the meeting, leader of Greenwich Council Cllr Chris Roberts said of Charlotte Turner: “If it’s rescuable then we’ll do that. But we have to do what’s best for the children.”

Unison branch secretary Onay Kasab said: “Now is the time for residents to follow the lead of the parents from Charlotte Turner. It is time to stand up for our services.”
