AN EXHIBITION is opening to mark 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin.

The £1m permanent exhibition opens to the public on February 13- the date after his birth- at the house where he lived and worked for forty years, Down House in Downe.

Visitors will be able to see notebooks written by the scientist during his voyage on HMS Beagle where he gathered information he used for his theory of evolution.

Other items include his hat, microscope, notebooks and his copy of Das Kapital, inscribed by Karl Marx.

There is also a full size replica of his tiny cabin on the Beagle.

A walk is also taking place on Darwin’s birthday, February 12, around Downe, particularly looking at mistletoe which Darwin studied.
