The Albany, Deptford, is launching a programme of activities for young people aged 13 to 19, including scriptwriting, filmmaking, acting, spoken word and dance theatre. There is also the opportunity to try out some behind the scenes work in a technical theatre course.

Sessions have been planned and organised by the Albany Youth Forum, based on feedback and requests from young people.

Estelle Buckridge, The Albany’s creative learning manager, said: “All the ideas for this season’s workshops have come from young people themselves.

“The truly unique thing about creative workshops at The Albany is young people get the opportunity to shape their own projects and work with professionals from across the industry on learning new skills and exploring new ideas. They also get to have a lot of fun, in a supportive atmosphere.”

The classes:

  • Friday Flex is a drop-in session every Friday for 13 to 19-year-olds. Each week an arts professional introduces participants to a new skill such as scriptwriting, spoken word, dance theatre or film making. No experience is required as the session will be adapted to suit the group. Fridays. 4pm to 7pm.
  • The Introduction to Technical Theatre course is for anyone who prefers to stay out of the spotlight and will cover stage management, lighting and sound. Saturdays, Feb 7 to Feb 21. 11am to 1pm. Ages 15 to 19.
  • Press Play is a half-term Scriptwriting workshop where young people will work with a professional writer and see their work performed by professional actors at the end of the week. Feb 16 to Feb 20. 10am to 5pm. Ages 13 to 19.
