ON JANUARY 14, members were delighted to see so many people turn up to hear guest speaker Mr Roger Tomlinson of the RSPB.
He gave an illustrated, amusing and informative talk about birds such as the robin, our national bird, of which there are nearly 12 million in the UK.
The Peregrine Falcon, the fastest animal in the world, can be seen from the Millennium Bridge, and there are six breeding pairs in central London.
The RSPB is the largest conservation society in Europe.
It is currently campaigning to stop the killing by some farmers and gamekeepers of our birds of prey.
Mr Tomlinson stressed the importance of our gardens, especially as so much natural habitat is disappearing.
Some of our gardens have become too functional, but we should encourage wildlife.
Apparently, if you dust your bird feed with chilli powder, the birds quite like it but squirrels hate it.
He also recommended visiting the Rainham Marshes Reserve which the RSPB established in 2000.
