RESIDENTS can make the most of their city by taking part in a series of walks.

A total of 40 free walks will take place across the capital on Saturday and Sunday, encouraging people to get out and explore the city's six major walking networks, which include the Green Chain and the Thames Path.

On Saturday, residents from Lewisham can take part in a two-hour walk around the ancient woodlands of Beckenham Place Park on the border of the two boroughs and on to Elmstead Wood, both home to a wide variety of wildlife.

Meet at 11am at Beckenham Junction.

On Sunday, children and adults from Greenwich can take part in a two-hour riverside stories walk telling the story of the wildlife and history of the Greenwich Peninsula.

The walk takes you from Greenwich Rail Station to the O2. Meet at 11am outside Greenwich Rail Station.

Other walks include one from Tower Bridge to Greenwich across the Thames Path, a journey from Charlton to Plumstead via Severndroog Castle, Shooters Hill, and a trip from Bromley-by-Bow to the Cutty Sark.

Each walker will be given a free colour guide, along with a pin badge of the route logo.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the walks will help Londoners to make the most of their weekend.

He said:“There have been occasions over the course of this winter when I have been gobsmacked to hear people say they have spent the weekend huddled in front of their fires, eyes glued to the latest soaps or talent contests, when they could be striding around our city agog at the beauty of our world class parks and attractions.”

Head of cycling Walking and Accessibility at Transport for London (TfL) Peter McBride said: “This weekend is designed to inspire people to get out and discover the joy of walking in London - from its riverside paths and green spaces to its interesting urban landscapes.

“Once the weekend is over we hope even more people will realise that walking is a quick, healthy and enjoyable way to get around the capital, whether it be for trips to work, school or for leisure.”

The event is organised by Walk London, a group promoting walking in the capital, and funded by TfL.
