A MINISTER has urged more people to volunteer in their community after visiting a sailing charity.
Minister for the third sector Kevin Brennan visited the Ahoy Centre, in Borthwick Street, Deptford, to promote the ‘Helping others can help you’ programme, which encourages people to volunteer.
The centre gives disadvantaged children the chance to get involved in water sports.
Mr Brennan met volunteers and youngsters before watching a film about the centre made by the Community Channel, a digital television station focusing on issues in the voluntary sector.
One of Ahoy’s projects is a 40ft-long powerboat for disabled people, the first of its kind in the world.
Centre development manager Mandy Corcoran told the minister: “We’re hoping our project is going to be a flagship for other people to follow.”
