OLYMPIC boxing coach Terry Edwards from Orpington has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

The 65-year-old has taken boxers to three Olympic Games including Beijing, coming back with a total of two gold, one silver and two bronze medals for Britain.

But he says this title is the “icing on the cake.”

Gaining the title for his services to sport, Mr Edwards said: “I am extremely honoured to be on the list. I really am surprised.

“It’s an honour for me and my family as I am very passionate about my job.”

Mr Edwards of Orchard Green started boxing when he was at school but has spent most of his career as a coach.

He said: “I would encourage anyone to get involved with sport. You can make a difference in your life, instead of hanging around street corners.

“It’s getting your life in order and going to a club and enjoying sport.”

The GB boxing team coach has a wife Diane and two grown-up children, Justine and Terry who are “absolutely delighted”.

A doctor who has spent many years working in the borough of Bromley has also been recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Dr Heather Nunnerley from Beckenham has been awarded an MBE for services to healthcare in south east London.

She worked as a consultant radiologist at King’s College Hospital, London and was chairman of the Ravensbourne NHS Trust (predecessor to the current PCT).

She went on to be a non-executive director of Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and is currently chairman of the trustees of Burrswood Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.
