PEOPLE are backing Bexley Council’s stand against fireworks.
Councillors have given their support to a motion by Councillor Sylvia Malt backing the Fireworks Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament.
The bill, if passed, will force fireworks parties to end at 11pm, ban noisy fireworks and restrict their sale to just three weeks before Bonfire Night on November 5.
Lots of residents have signed a petition backing the bill.
One of the petitioners, Carol Terry, of Sussex Road, said she and her neighbours would like to ban the sale of fireworks in shops, altogether.
She would like to see more organised fireworks displays, which she says would be far more spectacular than anything people could put on in their back gardens, and be a lot safer.
Mrs Terry said both animals and people can be terrified by the indiscriminate use of fireworks.
She said: “There are enough idiots out there who need no excuse to cause annoyance in their pursuit of having fun, without adding to their list of possible missiles.”
