PEOPLE in a busy road are calling for extra measures to slow down speeding drivers.

The residents of Penhill Road, Bexley, which has already seen some traffic-calming measures, want something more done — and speed cameras may be the answer.

The call follows an accident on Sunday night, when two cars collided just before 10pm.

One car, a red Ford Escort XR3I, driven by a woman in her 20s, smashed through a wall and ended up in a front garden. The other car careered into the front garden of another house, where it hit a car parked in the driveway.

The driver of the Ford Escort fled the scene despite attempts by residents to make her stay.

Her passenger, a woman in her 40s, had to be cut out of the car by firefighters and was taken to hospital complaining of chest pain. The driver of the other car, a man in his 20s, suffered shock.

The road was closed for an hour-and-a-half while the emergency services and council workers tended to the injured woman and cleared the debris from the road.

Bexley councillor Donna Briant, who lives in Penhill Road, said she would be talking to council officers this week about the situation.

“The problem is Penhill Road is one of the borough’s principal roads, so measures such as road humps would not be practical,” she said.

She hopes the council may consider requesting speed cameras to be installed.

Residents in Slade Green are already campaigning for measures to cut speed in Bridge Road and Slade Green Road, the scene of three accidents, one of them fatal, within weeks of each other.
