THE Green Party’s Mayoral candidate says he will axe Ken Livingstone’s roadbuilding schemes if he is elected.
Brockley ward councillor Darren Johnson, who is also leader of the Green Party group at the London Assembly, was selected as the party’s candidate for Mayor of London in May 2003.
He says his first action would be to scrap all Mr Livingstone’s roadbuilding schemes, including the £670m Thames Gateway Bridge.
He said: “The very first thing I’d do is scrap Livingstone’s plans for the Thames Gateway road crossing, the widening of the North Circular and other roadbuilding schemes.
“More roads simply mean more traffic.” Cllr Johnson says the £1.2bn saved from scrapping these schemes would be spent on new tram systems and an orbital network, cycling schemes, reducing fares and installing safe routes to schools.
