A pensioner has been awarded the prestigious medal of the Order of Mercy for his years of voluntary work.

Former waterboard worker Owen Proctor, 86, of Alverstone Gardens, New Eltham, is a member of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help (SSAFA Forces) south east London.

He was awarded the medal by the League of Mercy for his voluntary work with SSAFA Forces Help at the Mansion House, in the City of London, on June 6.

League of Mercy president Sir Robert Balchin said: “Mr Proctor has done extraordinary work for the welfare of ex-servicemen and women and their families. He has given distinguished voluntary service to his community and we were delighted to make this well-deserved award.” The League of Mercy was founded in 1899 for the encouragement and recognition of voluntary work in hospitals and the community.
