HAYES (KENT) EVENING TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD In June we travelled from the Falklands to South Georgia and Antarctica by way of an illustrated talk from our enthusiastic speaker Sue Hemming. The many islands visited en route to mainland Antarctica enabled the members to see the development and habits of the wildlife which abounds in this part of the world.

There are many seals; the largest is the elephant and the most ferocious the leopard seal. A variety of penguins with the speaker’s favourite being the chinstrap.

Amongst other birds the albatross the largest sea bird with its wingspan of 11-13 feet which can live up to 70 years. Also the huge hump-back whale. The changing landscape as one left minor glaciers on the outward journey to the thickness of the icebergs with their fascinating and dramatic shapes enhanced by wonderful sunsets made the harshness of the Antarctica’s terrain quite magical. A wonderful start to launch our new annual programme.

The popular annual Sunday lunch at Keston will be held on July 27. This is as usual extended to family and friends.

We look forward to welcoming you to our next meeting at 7.45pm on Wednesday on July 2 at Pickhurst Junior School Hall, Pickhurst Lane when Ms G Perrott will speak about ‘The Royal Ballet’. Do come and join our friendly group.
