A MAN wept as he spoke of the horror car smash which left him disabled and wheelchair bound.

Engineer Edward Franklin, 56, from Orpington, was giving evidence at an inquest into the death of Anthony Esomitoje, 22, from Deptford, who died in the crash.

Police are still hunting the driver of a car involved in the incident, which took place on November 3, 2001, in south Bermondsey.

The inquest at Southwark Coroner’s Court heard Greenwich-born business student Mr Esomitoje, of Marchant Street, died of severe head injuries in the smash.

He was the front seat passenger in a BMW which collided with a Peugeot driven by Mr Franklin.

Mr Franklin, who worked for 24 Hour Heating Services, was held up at a mini-roundabout when he saw the BMW approaching.

He said: “I turned to my left and remember saying: ‘You ain’t going to stop.’” Mr Franklin now has to use a wheelchair or two walking sticks to move around.

Police believe the BMW was being driven at up to 50mph by Umar Mamshie, 24. PC Colin Davies told the inquest he believed Mr Mamshie had been drinking heavily. But because he was in shock, medics refused to allow a blood test. He later disappeared from hospital where he was being treated.

Coroner Selena Lynch recorded a verdict of accidental death.
