A FORMER Eltham schoolboy is causing a sensation in Germany with a series of unusual performance art projects.

Dan Belasco Rogers, 36, has attracted a dedicated following in Berlin and plays to sell-out shows across Europe.

His latest project sees him and partner Sophia New, 28, from Balham, staging a public bed-in.

During a series of marathon stints under the sheets, in front of German festival crowds, they will sing and write down the titles of as many songs as they can remember.

Dan, a former pupil of Alderwood Primary School and Crown Woods Comprehensive School, said: “At the end we’ll be left with a bed full of songs written in black ink across the white duvet.

“As non-professional singers, we hope to bring a quality of the everyday and play out an intimate moment.

“The idea is taken to a competitive extreme of endurance and exhaustion.” Another of Dan and Sophia’s projects saw them dress up as the clown and young girl on the old BBC test card.

They invited supporters to email them suggestions the unlikely pair got up to while no-one was looking — and were inundated with ideas.

Dan said: “No-one has abused the idea and sent us contributions which take the mickey. It restores your faith in humankind.” One of his ambitions is to perform for a home crowd in Eltham.

Dan,whose father is painter Albert Belasco, said: “My childhood in south east London, playing in the woods, getting knocked down on the A2 in 1974 and going to Crown Woods School are all major influences on my life and work.” Mum Jackie Rogers, 65, of Wincrofts Drive, Eltham, said: “I’m very proud. They’ve gained universal success and appeared all over Europe and the British Isles. “They’ve got quite a reputation. It appeals to a certain type of person. It may not please traditionalists.”
