Despite predicted travel chaos due to the thick snow, my journey into work was surprisingly unstressed and I had reason to be quite impressed with the train service this morning.
I don’t know whether it was because it has only just been a few weeks since the last snowfall or that the train companies had more warning, but largely the trains were okay.
There was one slightly bizarre incident though.
I got to the train expecting carnage and sure enough my usual train (the 7.46am to Herne Hill from Streatham) was cancelled (due to a temporary fault with the signalling equipment, not the `adverse weather conditions’ excuse I had expected).
I went to get a large coffee and steeled myself for a 30 minute wait for the next train.
But minutes later a train pulled into Streatham which turned out to be the train I was waiting for.
The electronic screens showed the train was not due to call at the station but the doors opened and everyone got on and we were away.
I appreciate the train companies had a busy day but surely they know whether a train is going to turn up or not and can amend announcements?
When I arrived at Herne Hill similar confusion arose as the same announcement about the train not due to call at the station played out.
Ah well, I only arrived 20 late into work, so mustn’t grumble.
