A NAVAL flag was flying high over Gravesend last week after a ceremony to honour the heroes of the sea.
Gravesham Mayor Councillor Valerie Ashenden was presented with the red ensign flag by members of the Merchant Navy Association.
It was raised to the top of the civic offices to celebrate Merchant Navy Day, on Monday, September 3.
Founder of the Gravesend branch Stan Mayes said: “We are very proud to be able fly the red duster in the town which is renowned for its maritime heritage.”
Cllr Ashenden paid tribute to the “heroism and bravery” of those who served in the Merchant Navy.
