FIREFIGHTERS went on the pull at a Biggin Hill farm, and came up with a couple of cows. Biggin Hill Fire Brigade was called after two cows got stuck in a slurry pit at Whelan Farm.

Jean and Lusted Dawn were found by 29-year-old herdsman Neil Ammon as he rounded up cattle for milking. Within half-an-hour, farm-workers and firefighters had started to battle to free the cows. Firefighters made a plywood walkway to get to the sunken cows, and put fire hoses around their legs and chests. The farm's tractor then extracted the animals whose milk is worth £6,000 a year to the farm. Both cows escaped injury.

Mr Ammon said: "If the fire crew had not acted so promptly, it could have been the end for Lusted Dawn and Jean. The slurry pit would have acted like quick sand after a few hours. Like any good master Mr Ammon gave his underlings a dressing down after the incident. They have been told not to do it again."
