A SPRING start is expected for Abbey Wood and Thamesmead's new neighbourhood task force, the Street Wardens.

Greenwich Council has been given £180,000 to run the scheme, which will train 10 residents to deal with problems ranging from abandoned cars to anti-social behaviour, in partnership with the police.

The scheme is proving successful in Lewisham. Deputy Borough Commander Superintendent Jeff Harris said: “It is an excellent initiative. We fully support the use of local people in solving local problems.”

Erith and Thamesmead MP John Austin is hopeful of the success of The Street Wardens in Greenwich. He said: “This scheme could help improve the environment and the quality of life by speedy and effective responses to problems.”

Interested parties will be invited to apply to be Street Wardens in the near future.
