Two Bexley restaurants and cafes have been handed the lowest food hygiene ratings recorded among businesses inspected in the borough so far this year.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is designed to give customers an indication of the hygiene standards found at a food business when it was inspected.

A rating of one means major improvement is necessary, while a rating of two means improvement is necessary.

The highest rating, five, means food hygiene is considered "very good."

Here are the worst-rated food spots based on inspections in Bexley from this year.

Giggling Sausage, Welling

Giggling Sausage at 108 Welling High Street received a one-star rating following an inspection on January 17.

The inspection found food handling to be generally satisfactory but identified issues with the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, which were rated "improvement necessary."

The food safety management arrangements were given the more serious assessment of "major improvement necessary."

Sal's Cafe

Sal's Cafe Sidcup, at 65-67 Maidstone Road, was also given a one-star rating, according to the 2026 inspection data.

The inspection took place on May 6, with the business receiving a rating of one out of five.

A rating of one means major improvement was considered necessary at the time of inspection.

The website lists the cafe as Tudor Cafe, but Google Maps shows the site being under Sal's Cafe.

Delicio Bexleyheath

Delicio Bexleyheath, at 157 Broadway, received two out of five following an inspection on April 16. The rating means "improvement necessary."

Inspectors found food hygiene to be generally satisfactory, while the cleanliness and condition of the premises were rated "improvement necessary."

The management of food safety was assessed as generally satisfactory.

The FSA record shows food handling was considered very good, but the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were rated "improvement necessary."

Its management of food safety was assessed as generally satisfactory.

K's Spice African Restaurant, Erith

K's Spice African Restaurant at 13 Pier Road, Erith, also received two out of five following its July 10 inspection.

The inspection found that hygienic food handling was "improvement necessary."

However, the cleanliness and condition of the premises and the management of food safety were both assessed as generally satisfactory.

The FSA stresses that a rating reflects the standards found at the time of the inspection and can change after a business improves and is re-inspected.

The five businesses featured here are based on 2026 inspections and ratings of one or two out of five, rather than older inspections.

Businesses can appeal their rating, respond to it, or request a re-inspection through the local authority.
